Overview

If you are an experienced commercial driver looking to step away from long-haul driving into a reliable local schedule where you can make a tangible impact, this role offers a clear path forward. As a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Instructor, you will work directly with students at our training yard, coaching them through the practical skills required to earn their Class A CDL and start sustainable careers in transportation.

Your work supports our mission to help individuals gain personal and financial independence through quality CDL education. You will share your real-world experience, mentor motivated adult learners, and work alongside a team built on accountability, safety, and mutual success.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means guiding students step-by-step from their first day in the yard to passing their state road test. You will spend your days working outdoors and in vehicle cabs, helping students build skill and confidence in a safe, structured environment.

Key Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Hands-On Instruction: Teach students essential operating skills, including complete pre-trip and in-cab inspection routines, basic control maneuvers (such as straight-line, offset, and parallel parking), and safe public road driving in tractor-trailers and buses.
  • Simulated & Classroom Training: Guide students through trucking simulator exercises, monitor their progress, and assist with training materials and skill assessments.
  • Yard & Vehicle Management: Perform routine inspections on training equipment, handle basic upkeep like refueling and fluid checks, and safely reposition vehicles around the yard.
  • Documentation & Safety Compliance: Maintain accurate student records, track behind-the-wheel time, and strictly follow all site safety protocols and OSHA standards.
  • Patient In-Cab Coaching: Ride along with students during road practice on public streets, remaining calm, attentive, and encouraging regardless of traffic conditions or student stress levels.

Requirements (Must-Haves)

  • Current, valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • At least two years of relevant commercial driving experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent qualification.
  • Clear communication skills and the patience needed to coach novice drivers through repetitive tasks.
  • Physical capacity to work outdoors in all weather conditions, stand for extended periods, repeatedly climb in and out of cabs, bend to inspect vehicle undersides, and lift up to 25 pounds.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Prior experience in teaching, adult training, corporate instruction, or law enforcement.
  • Multilingual abilities.
  • Familiarity with commercial vehicle simulation programs.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Rate: $23.00 – $25.00 per hour, plus eligibility for monthly performance bonuses.

Included Benefits:

  • Health insurance stipend
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Paid vacation days, sick leave, and paid holidays
  • Professional training and instructor development programs
