Band Member (Synthesizer/Keyboardist)
The Synthesizer Player/Keyboardist is responsible for the sonic texture, harmonic depth, and electronic elements of the band's sound. This role blends traditional musicianship with technical sound design, requiring a balance of performance skill and gear management.
Core Responsibilities
Live Performance: Execute melodic lines, rhythmic patterns, and atmospheric textures during live shows and rehearsals.
Sound Design & Programming: Create, curate, and manipulate patches (presets) to match the band’s aesthetic. This includes managing oscillators, filters, and LFOs to build unique sounds.
Arrangement: Collaborate with other members to fill harmonic gaps, often doubling bass lines, providing pads, or leading with hooks.
Gear Maintenance: Manage a complex rig which may include hardware synths (analog or digital), MIDI controllers, and software instruments (VSTs).
Technical Troubleshooting: Ensure signal flow is correct (DI boxes, mixers, cables) and manage MIDI synchronization or backing track integration if required.
Technical Skills & Requirements
Proficiency in Keys: Strong grasp of music theory, scales, and chords. Ability to play with precise timing and dynamics.
Synthesis Knowledge: Understanding of Subtractive, FM, and Wavetable synthesis.
Software Competency: Familiarity with Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live, MainStage, or BandLab for live performance and recording.
Signal Routing: Experience with audio interfaces, MIDI routing, and pedals/effects processing.
Soft Skills
Collaborative Ear: The ability to "play for the song"—knowing when to provide a subtle ambient layer versus a standout lead.
Adaptability: Quickly adjusting patches or parts based on the venue's acoustics or band feedback.
Reliability: Consistent attendance at rehearsals and meticulous care for equipment during transport.
Potential Key Gear Knowledge
Hardware: Roland XPS series, Korg Minilogue, Nord Lead, or Akai MPK controllers.
Digital: Virtual instruments (Serum, Arturia V Collection) and cloud-based collaboration tools.
