Overview

If you have solid commercial driving experience and are ready to step away from long-haul routes, becoming a Commercial Truck Driver Instructor offers a rewarding way to share your expertise. In this role, you will work hands-on with students in our training yard and on local roads, teaching them the core skills needed to earn their Class A CDL and build safe, successful careers in transportation.

We provide state-approved classroom, simulator, and behind-the-wheel training. As an instructor, you play a direct role in helping students reach financial independence while working a predictable, local schedule.

What Success Looks Like

On a day-to-day basis, you will split your time between hands-on training, behind-the-wheel coaching, and basic administrative upkeep.

Training in the Yard and Classroom:

  • Teach students how to perform thorough pre-trip and in-cab safety inspections.
  • Coach backing skills, including straight line, offset left and right, and parallel maneuvers.
  • Explain tractor-trailer controls, gauges, key mechanical components, and basic maintenance concepts.
  • Guide students through simulator lessons and administer required written and practical tests.

On-the-Road Instruction:

  • Ride with students on local city, highway, residential, and rural roads.
  • Teach defensive driving techniques, smooth steering, proper braking, turning methods, and skid control.
  • Reinforce knowledge of state traffic laws, road signs, accident reporting, and safety protocols.

Yard Operations and Administration:

  • Track student drive time and maintain accurate training records.
  • Inspect, refuel, and reposition training vehicles in the yard, reporting any maintenance needs promptly.
  • Follow and help enforce all safety policies on school grounds and on the road.

Requirements

Must-Haves:

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
  • At least 2 years of professional truck driving experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and the patience required to coach new drivers calmly.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the role: climbing in and out of cabs, inspecting underneath trailers, standing or riding for extended periods, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Class A CDL without a manual transmission restriction.
  • Prior experience in teaching, field training, coaching, or law enforcement.
  • Fluency in a second language.

Compensation and Benefits

  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Health insurance stipend
  • Paid time off, paid holidays, and sick leave
  • Tuition reimbursement options
  • Ongoing professional training and development
