Healthcare security officers serve a vital role in protecting patients, staff, and visitors in hospital environments. In this position at St. Mary's Memorial Hospital, you will maintain a safe, welcoming atmosphere while providing essential security support to community healthcare operations. Compensation and Schedule
Pay Rate: $20.50 per hour
Shift Rotation: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM day shifts, or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM night shifts)
Work Model: Casual / Part-Time on-site position
What Success Looks Like
On a day-to-day basis, success means being a calm, visible, and approachable presence. You will patrol hospital grounds, assist visitors and staff, monitor security cameras, and respond quickly to emergency calls or security concerns. Using clear communication and de-escalation techniques, you will resolve tense situations peacefully and respectfully.
Over time, you will establish strong working relationships with hospital personnel and local emergency responders, helping maintain a consistently secure environment where healthcare workers can focus on patient care.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct regular patrols of interior facilities, entrances, patient areas, and parking lots.
Monitor security cameras, fire alarms, and access control systems.
Assist patients, staff, and visitors with inquiries and directions in a courteous manner.
Respond promptly to medical emergencies, fire alarms, and security calls.
Use verbal de-escalation skills to manage non-compliant or aggressive behavior.
Prepare concise, professional incident reports and complete daily shift logs.
Enforce facility protocols and safety procedures while upholding patient privacy and dignity.
Requirements
Must-Have Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Eligibility and ability to obtain a Nova Scotia Security License.
Valid Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C certification from a CSA-approved provider.
Strong spoken and written English communication skills.
Ability to complete Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) certifications. Note: Free prerequisite training is provided by the company prior to onboarding for candidates who commit to six months of service.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Prior experience in security, customer service, law enforcement, or healthcare settings.
Current Use of Force (UOF) or MOAB certification.
