Overview

Events play a vital role in bringing the Halifax community together. As a Casual Events Security Officer at Saint Mary's University and various event sites across the Halifax Regional Municipality, you will provide an approachable, observant, and reassuring presence to keep attendees, students, staff, and visitors safe.

This role offers predictable short shifts—typically 4 to 6 hours—on a flexible, as-needed basis. It is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in community safety, event operations, and customer service while supporting vibrant local events throughout the summer season.

What Success Looks Like

On a day-to-day basis, success means being visible, attentive, and helpful. You will patrol event facilities and grounds, monitor entry points, answer questions for event-goers, and address minor safety concerns before they escalate.

Over time, you will develop a deep understanding of site safety protocols, write clear and accurate incident logs, handle unexpected situations calmly alongside your team, and ensure every event runs securely from setup to teardown.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform regular foot patrols of event facilities, exterior grounds, and access points.

  • Greet event attendees, staff, and students while assisting with directions and safety inquiries.

  • Conduct identification checks and monitor access to restricted event areas.

  • Respond promptly to incidents, emergency situations, or safety hazards on site.

  • Provide First Aid and CPR support when needed.

  • Perform facility access procedures, including locking and unlocking designated areas.

  • Document events accurately through detailed occurrence logs and incident reports.

  • Collaborate with team leads and emergency services when required.

Qualifications

Must-Have Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Current Intermediate First Aid and CPR Level C certification from a CSA-approved provider.

  • Ability to qualify for a Nova Scotia Security License (Paladin covers license costs).

  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

  • Hold—or be willing to complete—Use of Force (UOF) and Management of Aggressive Behavior (MOAB) training prior to starting work. (Paladin covers training costs with a 6-month commitment).

  • Availability to work casual, as-needed shifts (4–6 hours) across days, evenings, nights, and weekends.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license and personal vehicle access.

  • Previous experience in security, customer service, or event support.
